Communication has changed. Remember when a consolidated advertising campaign was one that included the golden triptych of print, television and radio? As the habits of our audiences change, so must the ways and means marketers use to communicate ideas.
Digital communication opens up a broad spectrum of choices to convey your message. Methods may include a pod cast, an online video, an RSS feed subscription, website advertising, a simple e-newsletter or a direct mailout.
Digital communication brings motion and sound together with the printed word, and is able to deliver targeted messages directly to viewers on their home or work computers.
Let’s compare a newspaper advertisement with an online one, to illustrate the point.
A newspaper reaches only those who purchase a particular paper, and can only communicate a message confined to a small patch on a page. Newsprint is often expensive, and a message disappears within 24 hours, without you having any real idea how many people got it.
Online, viewers can come to you via a search on an area of interest, and are primed to listen to your message. If your message connects with them, within a few clicks they can be on your website, learning more about what you have to offer.
There is still a place for traditional methods of advertising, such as newspaper advertisements, but in an increasingly time-poor environment research shows consumers are choosing a more personalised experience, inline with their interests.
Online advertisements link to your website, or other online content hosted by you, and you are able to get detailed demographic information, by monitoring clickthroughs generated by your advertising. And, best of all, if you’re not getting the hits you want, you can change direction.
Digital communication is a powerful medium. With so many choices to make about how best to communicate it is important you make the right choices; not only about the messages you send, but also about the best medium for sending them.
