DoHA asked Spice & Co. Design to produce a Plain English and user-friendly Residential Care Manual as a guide to the complex legislation governing Australia’s Residential Health Care providers.
In essence we had to make something really complex, really easy to read. Our communication savvy client wanted us to design a look and feel that would inject a sense of modernity and respect among providers, and sought also to establish a brand that could be carried across a raft of upcoming publications.
We love a challenge, and thought we would add environmentally sustainable best practice to that pile of expectations.
The manual is an every day reference and will have a long shelf life and will therefore be subject to wear and tear through constant use so it was decided that plastic tab dividers, with a plastic ring bound cover and paper section contents would be the best choice, allowing the manual would be easily updated as legislation or policy changes occurred.
We worked with DoHA to ensure the entire publication was produced with recycled/post-consumer plastics and paper, and printed with environmentally friendly vegetable-based inks and water-based varnishes wherever possible.
Recycled plastic material was produced to order by Megara and Megara now have an agreement with the Department to collect and recycle the publication when the manual is eventually reproduced.
The Manual has been extremely well received by DoHA’s internal and external stakeholders and has gone on to be the brand cornerstone for a full range of publications.
This project just goes to prove you can produce publications to the highest publication standards as well as the highest environmental standards.
Thanks to our client, DoHA, Paragon printers and Megara. This project was a great team effort.
